An open letter to Linda Foley
I'm a reporter for a major newspaper in the northeastern US. I'm also a member of the Newspaper Guild. As a reporter at the Detroit Free Press in 1995, I participated in a strike against that newspaper, a strike which cost me my job, because I would not cross the picket line.
I take my membership in the Guild very seriously. That's why I was dismayed to learn that you, the president of my union, made a speech on May 13 in which you asserted that the US military has deliberately killed journalists. The relevant portion of the speech was videotaped and is available for viewing here.
Since then, you have failed to provide supporting evidence for your remarks, but neither have you retracted them. I spoke with you at 11:10 AM today by telephone; union secretary-treasurer Bernard Lunzer was also on the call.
When I told you that I would publish your response to me on the Internet, you declined further comment--except for the following: "I am not going to discuss this with you on the eve of Memorial Day weekend."
This remark strikes me as extremely odd. I can't think of a better time to redeem the honor of the US military by beginning a serious investigation of outrageous conduct on its part. If our soldiers are deliberately killing journalists, it's our duty to publicize it, so that such a terrible stain on our nation's integrity may be quickly cleansed.
If, as I believe, your charge is false, I can think of no better time to retract this slander.
There's a third possibility, though it seems to me a very remote one. I don't see how it's possible to misinterpret your remarks, which seem to me quite clear and unambiguous. But I'd be delighted to learn that I have misunderstood them.
I hold out some hope here, as I've just read a piece on the Editor & Publisher website, written by Thomas Lipscomb, who has covered this controversy for the Chicago Sun-Times. Lipscomb wrote that "Foley insists that she 'doesn't believe that our service men and women would knowingly fire on journalists and innocent civilians.' "
This might be the end of it, except that earlier you made statements that sought to distinguish between "the US military" from individual soldiers. This raises the possibility that you still believe that the military high command is somehow seeking the deaths of journaiists.
Up to now, your efforts at clarification have merely muddied the waters. I declare myself confused, and I'm not happy about it. I want to be clear about where my union's president stands on this issue.
I therefore call upon you to state clearly and unambiguously whether you believe that any branch of the US military or government has adopted a deliberate policy of targeting journalists in war zones. This is a simple question, easily answered. I can see no rational reason for you to hesitate about answering it.
At a time when the public's trust in the integrity of journalism is at a new low, our profession can't afford to encourage the perception that we're economical with the truth. I trust you'll put aside your hesitation and immediately explain yourself publicly, in a way that leaves no further doubt about your views on this matter.
Thanks for reading.
Hiawatha Bray

Thank you for staying on this, insisting that Foley further explains her words without muddying it any further.
Thank you very much for that. Part of the public's anger and mistrust comes from the media's unwillingness to investigate and criticize their own.
Hiawatha,
I'll have you know that the only reason we get your paper is for the sports section -- because my husband reads that. I used to regularly read it every day, but I haven't since about September 11 when the bias became unmistakable. However, I will now make it a point to read your column because somebody at your paper has the integrity to question its own.
Finally, a journalist with some guts. You are throwback to a better time in the newspaper business.
By speaking out, you’re performing an important service for the military, MSM, and country.
If Foley has proof, she should put it out there. Otherwise, she’s recklessly smeared men and women who are defending with their lives, Foley’s freedom and life.
MSM is engaging in a cover up for one of its own just as it did with Eason Jordan. A guard at Gitmo drops a Koran and MSM generates thousands of stories and headlines. How could that “abuse” have happened? But Foley and Jordan? Not much reporting there. No story really, right?
America and the civilized world will take a huge step forward in the war to defeat terrorists when our MSM reduces its hypocrisy and America-bashing.
If there is to be any public trust in your profession it will only be through outspoken efforts like yours.
Thanks.
Thank you. Linking.
There is absolutely no more appropriate time to do this.
Please stay on top of this and don't let up! She must be held accountable for such slanderous accusations. To have it done by the Guild she represents is even more important.
Hmmm. No comments so far on the clapping from the audience.
You've selected a very appropriate name for your blog. You've chosen the honorable path, indeed, in speaking out. The media's credibility is, well, nearly non-existant these days and it will be only because of people willing to address the real causes that this will change. You're certainly doing your part and I applaud your efforts. I'll be linking this as well and I notice you're due for an Instalanche!
We look forward to hearing more from you. Please let us know if you get a response.
Thank you for your polite but forceful letter. Your profession needs many more people like you to stand up and be counted. The only way I'd again read and listen to the MSM is if I could believe there was a resurgence of integrity.
Hiawatha Bray, well said! I recall you from time spent at the CompuServe Issues forum some ten years ago, and your political posture was reasonable, which I did find refreshing in a journalist.
Good for you on making it to the Globe. And I do hope your stature renders it untenable for Ms. Foley to ignore your inquiry.
Thank you for having the guts to ask Linda Foley to either show her proof or retract her statement about the U.S. military targeting journalists in Iraq.
I fervently hope that other journalists will be inspired (or shamed) by your courage and will join you in calling for proof.
While I am glad that you are speaking up against this slander by Foley, I take exception to your saying this:
I can't think of a better time to redeem the honor of the US military...
The honor of the US military does not need to be "redeemed" by journalists. It has been purchased by the blood, courage, and dedication of millions of our men and women since the nation was born.
The honor which needs to be redeemed is that of a generation of journalists who appear to have lost all sense of patriotism, love of country, and common sense. The fact that Foley can get away with such slander with impunity demonstrates that there is no honor left among the lot of you. You have become whores for those who hate this country.

Love your name! Thank you for this posting, I was beginning to think that the Guild had some kind of Dark Force that was paralyzing the entire field of MSM journalists (except of course for Jedi Lipscom).
Don't let up, Queen Foley must not be allowed to rule with impunity.
Baseless slander ought to be legally actionable even, or especially, when journalists do it.
I could never understand why or how the MSM engaged in this kind of deliberate and obstinate propaganda, until I discovered The Frankfurt School and Antonio Gramsci - the most influential Marxist thinker in the 20th century. And who's heard of him? If you want your eyes opened, Google search either term and start reading. Decent Americans have been asleep and are way behind the curve.
You and your managment indeed are courageous, but I suspect the other MSM magagement will fear the Guild and avoid the story.
It's a real pleasure to see a Globe columnist taking responsibility for the missteps of Linda Foley. It's a pleasure to see any MSM journalist do this--it's an even greater pleasure to see it from the Globe. Of course, you're a business columnist rather than political; so you're able to be a free thinker in the political realm. I'm not surprised that none of the Kool Aid drinkers on the political beat of the MSM media have yet to raise this issue (save for Tom Lipscomb).
I hope you're not holding your breath.
Perhaps one reason some journalists are a bit paranoid regarding their relationship with the armed forces is that some of them may recalll how deeply despised they were in Viet-Nam.
One reason the troops in the field generally hated to have journalists in the field with them was that usually said journalists failed to maintain satisfactory noise and movement discipline.
What a failure to maintain sensible noise & movement in the field did was too often to alert the enemy of the prescence of not only the dummy of a journalist, but also the troops with whom he was associated, thereby drawing the enemy's attention to & unnecessarily endangering those troops.
But because the troops hated having stumble-footed & noisy journalists in the field with them did not mean that the troops murdered any journalists.
Most journalists who died in the field were probably killed because they drew fire from the enemy, or merely because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. A battlefield isn't exactly the safest place to wander about.
Thank you for your open letter to Ms. Foley. As an ardent supporter of the Society of Professional Journalists and their code of ethics, thank you for demonstrating that Truth, Integrity and Media Ethics (TIME) has not been abandoned. I hope many other journalists in the MSM follow your lead and demonstrate again the high standards their profession once held so dear. As for an answer on Memorial Day...there's no better TIME than now!
I think this thing keeps coming up is because the template requires that the troops shoot journos. If they don't, it throws the whole world-view terribly 'off'.
Then, of course, after a few Foleys have popped-off, we have "the controversial issue of soldiers shooting Journos". She may have known exactly what she was doing. Not runaway emotion (tho that's what we're supposed to think it was), but planned subversion.
Part of which is the current event, of course, the poor emotional person's 'pillorying' and 'martyring' by savage right-wingers.
Well stated and well received.
More like you please!
Ms. Bray,
It is refreshing to see the MSM that do not adhere to Eason/Foley falsy accusing our troops of murder stand up and be counted.
It is unfortunate that you are over-shadowed by those who take no pride in being an American and seek any rumor to be-smudge the honor and valor with which our men and women in arms fight, who take the position that American is evil and the terrorists are "minutemen".
I applaud you and Mr. Lipscomb and hope your courage will encourage others to stand up and be counted.
Most sincerely,
Cheryl

Where is their outrage over the beheadings, mass graves, suicide bombings, etc???
The few who have dishonored their uniform and our country should not be representative of the most thoughful, kind, intelligent and deadly (to the enemy) military in the history of the world.
I applaud you and Mr. Lipscomb and hope your courage will encourage others to stand up and be counted.
Most sincerely,
Cheryl
Hiawatha, thrilled to see your site and thanks for holding their feet to the fire.
It must be tough surviving inside the Globe's walls. We'll look forward to your book on the subject, someday.

Hey,
I'm still not over the thrashing the troops took from the media surrounding the "conflict" in Viet Nam.
I came home and tried to bury everything including my emotions. It cost me dearly for decades.
Thanks for your efforts.
I hope that you will not give up. We didn't, but we were stabbed in the back for it and forced to leave a people to death and destruction.

Cheryl, just FYI, Hiawatha Bray is a guy.
How many union members are there? And why are you the only one asking Ms. Foley this question? I thought that questions were the stock in trade for journalism. Perhaps questions are no longer needed when the answers no longer need substantiated facts to support them.
Thanks Mona and my apologies Mr. Bray. I've been corrected a number of times and do appreciate it.
Cheryl
The sad part right now is that no one can challenge the military in this country without being accused of being unpatriotic. How can anyone prove anything about this war, without the facts from Rumsfeld, who will never provide them. We already know that we were lied to about the whole thing. It came out in the English elections that this game was planned well in advance, facts be damned. My patriotism is calling this war a sad, tragic moment in American history. In my lifetime everything about Vietnam has been forgotten. I support the troops - not the war.
